Quadrilaterals on a Coordinate Grid
This interactive tool is designed to help you learn how to plot coordinates and identify the properties of special quadrilaterals. By dragging vertices around a cartesian grid, you can explore how changing coordinate values affects side lengths, parallel lines, and the overall classification of the resulting quadrilateral.
The activity is split into an open exploration mode and a structured puzzle challenge.
How to Use
Tab Navigation
Switch between the main activities using the tabs:
- Coordinates & Shape: Freely drag points, reveal their coordinates, and identify the resulting shape.
- Challenge: Test your skills with the Missing Vertex Challenge by completing a specified shape.
- 🎨 Settings: Customize the grid appearance (like switching to a bold teaching grid), shape colors, and side marks.
View Controls
In the sidebar, you can use the Quadrants drop-down to change the grid view. You can choose to work in All 4 quadrants (handling both positive and negative numbers) or restrict the view to just Quadrant 1 (positive numbers only), Quadrants 1 + 2, or Quadrants 1 + 4.

The Coordinates & Shape tab is a sandbox for exploring geometry on the coordinate plane.
đź§ How to Use the Tool
Drag any of the vertices (A, B, C, or D) around the grid to reshape the quadrilateral. Click the A = (?, ?) buttons to reveal the exact (X, Y) coordinates of each vertex.
Try to guess the quadrilateral you have created based on its properties, then click Shape Name = ? to check your answer. The tool recognizes squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, kites, darts, and trapeziums (trapezoids).
You can also use the side mark toggles to investigate the shape’s properties visually:
- Mark equal sides: Adds tick marks to sides that are the same length.
- Mark parallel sides: Adds arrows to indicate pairs of parallel lines.
- Show diagonals: Draws dashed lines connecting opposite vertices to help visualize symmetry.
Click the Random button to instantly generate a new mystery quadrilateral with hidden coordinates to investigate.

The Challenge tab tests your understanding of shape properties and coordinate plotting.
đź§ How to Use the Tool
When you click New Challenge, the tool will provide a target shape (for example, “Make a Rectangle”) and plot three of the four vertices (A, B, and C). The fourth vertex (D) is kept hidden.
Your goal is to figure out the exact coordinates where vertex D needs to be placed to successfully complete the target shape.
Enter your X and Y values into the input boxes and click Check Answer. If you are correct, the missing vertex will appear, completing the shape. If not, an orange cross will mark your guessed location, and the incorrect coordinate inputs will be highlighted so you can adjust your values and try again!
